Rooftop acoustic insulation on an exclusive Madrid building
Modular acoustic screens for rooftop extractors and HVAC systems on a landmark building.
The challenge
SNA Acoustic Consultancy addressed the definition and design of corrective acoustic insulation measures on the rooftop of a landmark building in Madrid, aiming to reduce noise generated by kitchen extractors and HVAC machinery located on the upper level.
The intervention focused on minimising sound transmission towards apartments on lower floors, with particular attention to the low-frequency component characteristic of these installations. The project was designed to ensure compliance with the Madrid City Council Ordinance on Protection against Acoustic and Thermal Pollution (OPCAT, 2011).
The solution
The solution consisted of high-performance modular acoustic screens. For the kitchen extractors, an "L"-shaped screen was designed, optimised to intercept direct noise propagation towards the most sensitive receptors. For the HVAC machinery, a screen with greater longitudinal extent was installed, covering the main front of the units while maintaining accessible panels for maintenance.
The systems were built using demountable multilayer panels with high insulation and acoustic absorption, composed of galvanised steel sheet, high-density rock wool core and perforated interior finish to optimise absorbent performance. The structure was stiffened with steel profiles and specific anchors, ensuring wind stability and avoiding unwanted vibrations or resonances.
The result
The result was a technically effective, structurally safe solution fully integrated into the urban environment, reconciling rooftop technical installations with high-standard residential acoustic protection in compliance with current municipal regulations.
