Music conservatory: sonic precision in a heritage building
Bespoke insulation and conditioning for each instrument within a protected heritage building.
The challenge
The acoustic project was developed as part of the renovation of a music conservatory located in a historic building, which imposed significant construction constraints due to heritage protection. The solutions had to be compatible with the building's preservation, conditioning thicknesses, construction systems and structural intervention possibilities.
The design went beyond CTE compliance, taking into account the emission characteristics of each instrument: percussion or drum rooms — with high levels and low frequencies — require very different treatment from tuba or flute rooms. This required adjusting insulation solutions and reverberation times according to the specific use of each space.
The solution
The intervention addressed both acoustic insulation between rooms and interior conditioning of classrooms, also ensuring the protection of sensitive spaces such as the library and study rooms.
The complex also includes a multipurpose concert hall, for which a specific acoustic study was carried out to optimise its response for different types of performance. Special attention was given to building services noise control, establishing strict criteria to prevent HVAC systems from interfering with musical practice and the overall sonic quality of the building.
The result
Optimised insulation and reverberation were achieved for each space according to its specific musical use, all compatible with the heritage protection of the building. The multipurpose hall offers an adequate acoustic response for different types of performance, and building services noise control ensures that no technical system interferes with the conservatory's musical activities.
