Advanced acoustic monitoring at an industrial power plant

One year of continuous monitoring correlating 40–50 operational parameters with acoustic compliance.

The challenge

Within an R&D project, SNA Acoustic Consultancy faced the challenge of going beyond simple sound level recording. The objective was to analyse in depth the relationship between the operational functioning of an industrial plant and regulatory compliance at the site perimeter.

The issue was not straightforward: non-compliance was not so much due to the overall equivalent continuous level, but rather to the appearance of tonal, impulsive and low-frequency components that triggered regulatory correction factors. Precisely identifying which operating configurations generated non-compliance risk required a radically different approach from conventional methods.

The solution

SNA developed a continuous acoustic monitoring system spanning a full year, providing a robust and representative database across different operating scenarios and environmental conditions.

Simultaneously, data from approximately 40–50 pieces of equipment and operational parameters were integrated, correlating acoustic behaviour in real time with load states, start-up sequences, partial load regimes and specific operating conditions.

Subsequent analysis identified clear operating patterns associated with regulatory penalties, particularly related to low-frequency components and impulsiveness. The scenarios in which perimeter exceedances occurred were precisely determined.

The result

This approach transformed an apparently diffuse problem into a quantified, operational diagnosis. The plant was able to identify exactly which operating configurations generated non-compliance risk, facilitating technical and operational decisions without oversizing corrective measures.

This project represents the evolution towards Intelligent Industrial Acoustics, where advanced monitoring, massive data analysis and methodological innovation enable anticipating non-compliance, optimising operations and turning acoustic control into a strategic industrial management tool.
